The need for nurses today to be highly trained and well-educated, is a requirement enabling them to make complex clinical decisions that believe it or not, a few decades ago would almost certainly have been made by doctors. As the population’s healthcare needs have changed, so too has the scope of practice for nurses and midwives. Serving as the chief operating officer of The Americare Companies, Faivish Pewzner has been able to learn the inside out of this noble profession, as well as the factors that have impacted its progress.
To ensure that nurses can take on new and complex roles, apparently a change in education and training was needed. Nursing care today consists of having an extreme degree of professional skill and involves obligations exceeding hygiene and comfort procedures though these aspects of care are still important. Today’s nurses need to be extremely skilled with up to date technological developments; they need knowledge of science & humanities. Tasks are complicated and critical thinking skills are essential.
Moving forward, Faivish Pewzner takes a look at the key roles of nurses today, and goes further to explore some of the biggest trends that are bound to shape the nursing field.
The nurse’s role in healthcare has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Not that long ago, nurses mostly served a few main causes-such as being midwives and giving basic care to patients, which means they were not nearly as respected and independent as their doctor superiors. Roles of modern nurses are very broad and often interlope and the last few decades have turned that stigma upside down, though. Modern nurses can further their careers all the way up to the Ph. D level and some even have their own practice. Depending on their education and licensing level, nurses can do anything from helping doctors, to providing support in the O.R. and even becoming fully-fledged Nurse Practitioners.
Just like many industries, Faivish Pewzner notes, they too have to climb the career ladder and do so by pursing as much education as possible, and getting all the licenses needed to be successful in your career. Furthermore, not only do nurses have to ensure they are always up to date in their practice, but they also must have a clear, clinical career path supported by relevant education and development.
Over the coming years, there will be a significant increase in the need for specialized knowledge in nursing. As we are dealing with people who become increasingly old, who at the same time deal with a range of health problems such as obesity and obesity-related illnesses, people will require more specialized care, as they try to stay out of the health care system.
