The mandatory use of masks is not the only reason why you should know the different models that exist on the market. Faivish Pewzner, the Chief Operating Officer of Americare points out that now it is an obligation, but it is very likely that for a long time it will remain one of the most widespread protection recommendations until the appearance of a vaccine that puts an end to the problem.
Are all masks the same? Not much less. Each one has its characteristics, its time of effectiveness and its level of protection. Here, Pewzner points out the characteristics of the different types of masks.
Use of homemade face masks
Its degree of effectiveness will depend on the type of fabric used or the number of layers. However, Pewzner, the owner of a home care provider company, points out that the protection against contagion has not been demonstrated, only the effectiveness to contain to a certain extent the particles that come out of our mouth. They can be washed and reused.
Hygienic masks
They offer protection for 4 hours avoiding the spread of the particles that leave our mouth. Pewzner indicates that they are those that are usually used for other activities such as painting with varnishes or cleaning with mild products. There are washable and single use.
Surgical masks
They are single-use masks that offer a more efficient level of protection than homemade and hygienic ones. Pewzner points out that they are the most recommended by health authorities to avoid transmission.
Use of FFP masks
The WHO insists that this type of mask should be reserved exclusively for healthcare personnel and those most exposed to the risk of contagion. Pewzner indicates that they are available with or without a valve, provide protection in both directions and have a durability of approximately 8 hours. Once used, they are neither washed nor recycled.
One of the main changes that we will face when reaching the phase of new normality, will be the use of masks in our routines. Faivish Pewzner claims that we must be aware that the reduction in the number of infections and deaths from COVID-19 does not mean that we have eradicated the virus. The threat is still present and, especially when you have contact with vulnerable groups, all preventive measures are important for the care of the elderly.
